The Gulag Prison System, which was controlled by Soviets, was truly horrific. People were sentenced to the camps by even just making a joke about the czar and his leadership. The camps purpose was to correct the wrong doings of russian civilians with labor. The Gulag started up in the late 1920's, and lasted through the 1980's. These forced labor cams were supervised by the State Security. Around two million people died in the Gulag out of the estimated twenty/forty million who were sentenced.
The Gulag is similar to the Holocaust in the sense that people were forced into labor, but in the Holocaust there was mass genocide of one targeted religion. In the Gulag, specific people were not targeted or killed. Those who disobeyed the rules were sent to the Gulag to work. Most of those who died, died because of starvation.
